The most useful Airbnb kitchen essentials let guests prepare a simple meal, eat together and clear up afterwards. A cupboard full of mismatched equipment is less helpful than a small, complete set that works with the hob, fits the oven and serves the advertised guest capacity.
For a London flat, start with the meals your kitchen can realistically support and the storage available. This checklist helps you choose equipment and check the finished setup. Use our broader Airbnb amenities guide when deciding which features to offer across the whole property.
What should an Airbnb kitchen include?
As a starting point, Airbnb’s home preparation guidance suggests table settings for the maximum guest count, cooking equipment, a kettle and coffee maker, and washing-up supplies. Treat these as useful setup suggestions, then match the equipment to the kitchen you actually advertise.
For a kitchenette, explain the limitations clearly. A microwave and kettle support a different stay from a kitchen with a hob and oven. Avoid describing either as “fully equipped” without showing what guests can use. Airbnb’s ground rules for hosts require amenities and listing descriptions to reflect what is available during the stay.
Build the equipment list around everyday meals
Walk through making breakfast, preparing a simple evening meal and serving everyone together. The following is a suggested shopping checklist, rather than a platform requirement.
- Eating and drinking: dinner plates, smaller plates, bowls, mugs, drinking glasses and a complete set of cutlery for each guest.
- Hob cooking: a frying pan and saucepans with suitable lids, in sizes that suit the guest count. Check that they work on the fitted hob.
- Oven cooking, if available: an oven tray and ovenproof dish that fit inside the appliance, plus clean oven gloves.
- Preparation: usable kitchen knives, chopping boards, a peeler, grater, mixing bowl, measuring jug and colander.
- Cooking and serving: a spatula, stirring spoon, serving spoon and tongs suited to the cookware surfaces.
- Small tools: a working tin opener, bottle opener, scissors and trivet. Test the tin opener rather than counting it as present.
- Breakfast equipment: a kettle and any toaster or coffee equipment you choose to advertise, with the accessories needed to use them.
Buy replacements that can be sourced individually where possible. Check handles, lids and cupboard space before ordering a large matching bundle. A pan that cannot be stored conveniently or a bowl too large for the dishwasher creates an avoidable daily nuisance.
How many plates, mugs and pans do you need?
Provide enough usable table settings for everyone to eat at once. Then decide what spare capacity makes sense for washing-up arrangements, breakages and storage. There is no single spare-stock multiplier that suits every flat.
Illustrative four-guest setup: an owner might choose six dinner plates, six side plates, six bowls, six mugs and six drinking glasses, with six complete cutlery settings. Four guests can eat together, with two spare settings available. This is a planning example, not an Airbnb minimum or a promise about StayinLondon properties.
Cookware needs a different check. Can guests boil pasta and make a sauce at the same time? Will the frying pan hold a meal for the group? Can everyone sit down with the food, or does the serving setup require several rounds? Choose pan sizes around those tasks rather than buying one pan per person.
Test the hob, oven and coffee setup as a guest
Try the equipment in the actual kitchen. For induction, check each pan on the installed hob. Confirm that an oven tray fits with the door closed and that guests can find the controls, timer and any child-lock release instructions in the manufacturer’s guide.
For coffee equipment, identify the compatible pods, filters or other consumables. A machine without the right accessories is an incomplete amenity. Decide what starter supply is included, whether guests buy further supplies and where they can find the model details.
Put short operating instructions in the welcome pack. Explain unfamiliar controls in plain language and keep the manufacturer’s instructions available. Remove faulty equipment from use and assign any repair through a clear maintenance handover.
Leave room for guests’ groceries
Reserve an obvious cupboard or shelf for food and check that the fridge has usable space. Keep the preparation surface clear enough to put down a chopping board and ingredients. Decorative displays should not occupy the only practical workspace.
In compact kitchens, label cupboard contents lightly or include a simple location guide. Place everyday items where guests can reach them without moving the owner’s stored belongings. Keep private reserves separate from the supplies guests may use.
Define consumables and cleaning supplies
Write down the supplies included at arrival: for example, washing-up liquid, a suitable sponge or brush, clean drying cloths, bin liners and dishwasher tablets where applicable. If you provide tea, coffee or other food items, define the starter quantity and replenishment arrangement. Keep supplied products identifiable, with their labels and storage instructions available.
Plan how reusable cloths and tea towels return to clean stock. The Food Standards Agency’s kitchen cleaning guidance advises washing or changing these items regularly and washing and drying them before reuse. It also recommends using different cloths for different cleaning tasks. Make that separation clear in your housekeeping routine.
Record consumables in the property inventory, using units the team can count. “One unopened pack of dishwasher tablets in reserve” is easier to check than “plenty of tablets”. Set a reorder point around actual use and delivery arrangements.
A final kitchen check before arrival
- Confirm that usable table settings match the incoming guest count.
- Check cookware, lids and utensils are clean, complete and in their normal places.
- Remove chipped crockery or damaged equipment from the guest allocation.
- Confirm advertised appliances are ready to use and their instructions are accessible.
- Replenish the agreed starter supplies and put clean cloths in place.
- Check food-storage space, bins and the worktop, then assign any remaining shortage before check-in.
Link this check to the cleaning and turnover process. If an advertised appliance is unavailable, communicate with the guest promptly; recording the fault internally does not resolve the booking expectation.
